ELEVEN

AUTUMN

“Want to see the outfits Jaden and Luna are wearing for the wedding?” I ask.

My husband and I are in the main bedroom of our two-room suite, unpacking our suitcases and situating ourselves for the week. Our twins are with my mom and dad, who are already in the pool with them.

Our babies are eighteen months old and they are a handful. When they were first born, I wanted to take care of them on my own. I didn’t need a nanny, I kept telling Ash. I learned from the best, and I could totally do this.

After a while, I became overwhelmed. Once they started to walk, forget it. I was chasing them everywhere. Crying. Exhausted. During football season, I started to feel completely isolated. So alone. Until my husband finally had enough and said one day, “Fuck this. We’re hiring a nanny. It doesn’t make you less of a mother if you need help.”

My life has completely changed since Laura came into our lives. She’s around my mother’s age, has adult children and is so good with babies, it’s not even funny. Our twins adore her.

So do I.

Where we’re staying here in Maui is so unbelievably beautiful, I can’t get over it. My parents call it the compound. The estate is so large, the wedding is being held here too. Out on the lawn, overlooking the ocean.

It’s happening in two days, and I can’t wait.

“Our children are getting dressed up for the wedding?” Ash has his back to me as he hangs up his clothes in the closet.

An irritated sound leaves me. Sometimes, my husband forgets important details. “They’re actually in the wedding, Ash. Remember?”

He turns to face me, chuckling. “Really? Your brother and Hannah want to take that risk, huh?”

“What do you mean?” I rest my hands on my hips, vaguely offended.

“They’re going to be chasing those little buggers everywhere. They don’t ever stay in one spot and you know it.”

“Kenzie and Rhett are in it too,” I add.

Ash breaks into full-blown laughter. “It’s going to be a major disaster then.”

“Asher.” He must hear the irritation in my tone because the laughter dies. “It’s going to be meaningful, having our children participate in my brother’s wedding. Jake and Hannah asked me if they could.”

“More like Hannah asked you, but whatever.” He resumes unpacking his suitcase.

“You want to see the outfits?” I ask again, trying to tamp down my irritation.

I’ve been a little on edge lately, and I don’t know why. Things are going well for us. Ash’s NFL career is still going strong—he just signed another four-year contract for an ungodly amount of money. Thanks to that contract, and knowing Ash is in a more permanent place, we just bought a new home and are moving in about a month. Our children are thriving. I’m making friends with the other players’ wives, getting closer to the ones who have children so we can compare notes. I feel close to my family as well. The bachelorette party we threw for Hannah a few weeks ago was a smashing success, and we all had so much fun.
